Why this exists
Complete ship data is usually locked away
Design and engineering material for a vessel is normally proprietary. That makes it hard for students and researchers to work on a realistic, complete ship. This repository opens up one real case, so everyone can work on the same vessel.
Research
Ship design, hydrodynamics, structures and digital ship models, on a hull that exists and sails.
Teaching
Student projects and courses built around full drawings, not simplified textbook examples.
Benchmarking
A shared reference for validation and reproducible experiments across groups.
Digital tools
Test data for digital shipbuilding tools, CAD pipelines and exchange formats.
Production drawings · A0 sheets
Fifteen drawings, each in DWG, DXF and PDF
From the general arrangement and lines plan to shell expansion and the fire zone plan. Drawing units are millimetres. Frames run from 0 at the aft perpendicular at 500 mm spacing.
PDF opens GitHub's viewer. DWG (AutoCAD 2018, AC1032) is the authoritative source; DXF is the ASCII exchange format.
3D model & engineering documents
Beyond the drawings
3D CAD model
Hull and superstructure modelled by C-JOB from the same source data as the drawings. The viewer above uses a simplified glTF copy made by NTNU, kept in derived/.

The two CAD files are stored with Git LFS. Cloning without LFS gives small pointer files; use the links above or git lfs pull.

The general arrangement, as data
The GA drawing read into structured JSON: decks and spaces, tanks and equipment. Every entry carries its SFI group code and, where the mapping is unambiguous, a DNV VIS/GMOD v3.10a top-level node, so it joins against other SFI- or VIS-coded datasets.
This list is read from the GA and does not reconcile with the capacity totals. Use Tank Plan Rev1 (tanks 1–15, 202.42 m³ net) when the tank data matters.
The propulsion entry was inferred from geometry and is wrong. The engine room arrangement identifies PM azimuth drives, port and starboard.
Traceability
Where the sheets disagree
Values are kept as printed on each sheet rather than silently corrected. These are the known differences.

operational/ · measured at sea
Gunnerus at work
Measurements from the vessel in service: ship motion, machinery, crane and the sea around her. Each case comes from a published study, and the study is the reference for how it was done and what it found.
Study · 31 October 2023
Wave-shielding experiment
Holding position on DP in Breisundet, west of Ålesund, Gunnerus was turned in seven 15° steps between two wind seas nearly 90° apart, while a wave buoy measured the calmer water on her lee side and an accelerometer measured the crane hook.
- Window
- 10:00–12:10 UTC, seven cases of about 15 minutes
- Sensors
- Seapath GNSS + MRU, DP wind, Palfinger crane angles, azimuth and tunnel thrusters, engines, Miros wave radar and RangeFinder, crane-hook accelerometer, LainePoiss wave buoy (50 Hz)
- Data
- Eight CSV files, about 16 MB, with a data dictionary and the extraction script
165–180° to the main wave gave the least crane motion and a reasonably calm lee. At 90–120° the shelter was most effective, but the crane moved more.

Operating profile · 30 October – 3 November 2023
Power and energy profile
Five days of the ship's own machinery log: when the three engines ran, how they shared the load, what the azimuth drives did, and where the fuel went, split into stationary, station-keeping, manoeuvring and transit, with the track on a map. Every number is marked as measured, derived or assumed.
- Data
- 7,200 one-minute rows: speed, GPS position, three engines (load, fuel, speed), two azimuth drives
- Not measured
- Electrical power, generators, switchboard, batteries, tank levels
- Study
- None yet: the classification and the page are ours, the measurements are the ship's logger data
About half of the week's fuel was burned in the roughly 12 % of the time spent in transit at about 10 knots.
Data from Robert Skulstad (NTNU), organised by Henrique M. Gaspar (NTNU). Fuel is the logger's value and looks computed from engine load.
